I am an asylum seeker

Serco is responsible for providing and maintaining housing for asylum seekers in Beeston.

Contact Serco to deal with any housing problems. There will be contact details in your accommodation.

I have just got my letter from the home office saying I have leave to remain

You must go to Broxtowe Borough Council as soon as possible and ask for housing. Do not wait until the date on the letter before you contact the Council.

If you need help with this process, please speak to Citizens Advice

YOU MUST ACCEPT WHATEVER HOUSING YOU ARE GIVEN FIRST, EVEN IF IT IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT OR IT IS FAR AWAY. IF YOU DON'T, YOU MAY END UP HAVING TO SLEEP ON THE STREETS.

Private Rented Housing

When you get leave to remain, you will need to leave Serco housing. The easiest way to find housing a in the private rental market.

You can use Universal Credit to help you with rental costs. Check with the job centre how much help you can get - it's often called "housing benefit".

There are several websites which show property available to rent. Some will require that you have a job, and others may not.

Council housing

It is difficult to get a council house in Beeston as there are not many available. You will need to apply to the council and explain why you need a council house and not a private rented house. If you do get a council house, you will have to pay rent to the council and will still need to pay for your gas, electricity and other bills. In order to apply to the council for a house, you need to have lived in Broxtowe (Beeston) for 3 years or have got your leave to remain from the Home Office while you are living in Beeston.

If you apply to the council, you will be put into a priority category based on your circumstances. For example, a family with young children would be a higher category than a single man.  If you are a single man (not married), there may be a wait of several years.
